To produce, distribute, and advance the use of an indicator based water purification system, relying entirely on solar energy, in communities where water borne diseases are prevalent. Further, we strive to promote education and public awareness of clean water and sanitation practices. - The United Nations recommends that 20-50 liters of fresh water be used to meet each person’s daily basic needs.
- The World Health Organization reports that at least one in six people worldwide, a growing total of 894 million, do not have access to even the lowest recommended amount of freshwater required to meet their basic needs.
- It is further estimated that nearly 1.2 billion people worldwide live without basic sanitation.
- Poor sanitation coupled with inadequate availability of clean water account for 88% of diarrheal deaths, one of the leading causes of deaths worldwide.
- 90% of all deaths caused by diarrheal diseases are children under 5 years of age, mostly in developing countries.
- Investment in safe drinking water and sanitation contributes to economic growth. For each $1 invested, the WHO estimates returns of $3 – $34, depending on the region and technology.
- The benefits of the interventions included time savings associated with better access to water and sanitation facilities, the gain in productive time due to less time spent ill, health sector and patients costs saved, and the value of prevented deaths.
